From filing to registration at UKIPO

  1. 1

    Filing

Online application with the classes and specification.

  2. 2

    Examination

An examination report usually arrives within a few weeks.

  3. 3

    Notification

The UK IPO may notify owners of similar earlier marks; it does not refuse on that basis itself.

  4. 4

    Publication

The mark is published for 2 months, extendable to 3 by a notice of threatened opposition.

  5. 5

    Registration

Without opposition, registration typically follows about 4 months after filing.

Rules worth knowing before you file

  • An address for service in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands is required for the application.
  • Since 2021 EU trade marks no longer cover the UK. Owners of EU marks registered before 2021 received comparable UK marks automatically.
  • Renewal is due every 10 years from the filing date.

How Trademarking handles a UKIPO filing

  1. Step 1

We search UKIPO records and the other offices you choose for identical and similar marks, and show a registration likelihood with the closest conflicts and their source.

  2. Step 2

We map what you sell to Nice classes and suggest wording from the office lists, which keeps you clear of surcharges and objections. See the class guide.

  3. Step 3

We prepare the UKIPO application: applicant details, mark type, classes and the goods and services text.

  4. Step 4

You file in your own name and pay the official fee directly to UKIPO. An address for service in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands is required.

  5. Step 5

After filing, deadlines, office actions, publication and the opposition window appear in your portfolio, and trademark monitoring alerts you to similar new filings.
