Trademark renewal service that never lets a deadline pass
Short answer
Most trademarks must be renewed every 10 years to stay in force, and US marks also need a declaration of use between years 5 and 6. A trademark renewal service tracks each deadline and reminds you early. Trademarking does this for every mark in your portfolio.
- USPTO: Section 8 declaration between years 5 and 6, then Sections 8 and 9 every 10 years.
- EUIPO and UK IPO: renewal every 10 years, with a 6 month grace period for a surcharge.
- Reminders go out at 90, 30 and 7 days before each deadline.
Renewal rules at the main offices
Fees come from each office fee schedule; see the cost guide for sources and other offices.
| Office | When | Official fee as of 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| USPTO | Section 8 in years 5 to 6; Sections 8 and 9 in year 9 to 10 and every 10 years | 650 USD per class for the combined filing |
| EUIPO | Every 10 years from filing; 6 month grace period with surcharge | 850 EUR for one class online |
| UK IPO | Every 10 years from filing; 6 month grace period with surcharge | 200 GBP for one class online |
| CIPO | Every 10 years from registration | about 586 CAD for the first class online |
| IP Australia | Every 10 years from filing | 400 AUD per class |
What goes wrong without a calendar
Renewal notices from offices are a courtesy and often go to an old address. Owners also receive official-looking letters from private companies asking for large renewal or publication fees; most offices warn about these. Trademarking shows the real deadline and the official fee, and links to the office payment page.
In the US the declaration of use is easy to miss because it falls years before the first renewal. A missed Section 8 declaration cancels the registration.
How renewals work in Trademarking
-
Step 1
Import your marks
Add marks by registration number; dates are read from the public record.
-
Step 2
See every deadline
Renewals, declarations, office actions and opposition windows appear in one calendar.
-
Step 3
Get reminders
Email reminders at 90, 30 and 7 days to the people you assign.
-
Step 4
Renew
Pay the official fee directly to the office; where a representative is required, a partner attorney files.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens if I miss a renewal?
- Most offices allow a 6 month grace period with a surcharge. After that the mark lapses and you would have to file again, possibly behind someone else.
- Do I need to show use to renew?
- At the USPTO yes, with a specimen for each class. The EUIPO and UK IPO do not ask for proof at renewal, but unused marks can be challenged after five years.
- Can I renew only some classes?
- Yes. Most offices let you drop classes at renewal, which lowers the fee.
- Does Trademarking pay the office for me?
- No. Official fees are paid by you directly to the office, so you always see exactly what the office charges.
