Best Trademark Docketing Software for Small Law Firms Compared
Trademarking editorial team 7 min read
Alt Legal fits small firms seeking dedicated trademark docketing, while AppColl fits practices that need US patent and trademark auto docketing together. PATTSY WAVE and Anaqua belong on the shortlist for broader IP operations; Clio fits general practice management with separately maintained trademark deadlines. Trademarking fits firms combining registry based trademark deadline tracking with search and daily watch.
This comparison is for US IP practices with 1 to 20 attorneys. Trademarking is our product and is not a law firm. It provides trademark search, filing preparation, daily registry watch and portfolio tracking, but it is not a full practice management or billing system and does not do patent docketing.
Trademark docketing software compared
Compare the work each product handles before comparing subscription totals. A calendar, an IP docket and a registry watch can share dates while serving different purposes. The published prices below are reference points; check current pricing and scope with each vendor.
| Tool | What it is | Pricing model | Trademark specific docketing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alt Legal | Trademark docketing for law firms and in house teams | G2 lists an entry plan at 60 USD monthly for up to 50 matters, unlimited users. Check current pricing | Pulls USPTO and international office data to update matters | Small firms prioritizing trademark docket administration |
| AppColl | Cloud patent and trademark docketing and practice management | G2 lists PM Pro starting at 100 USD per user monthly. Check current pricing | Auto docketing for US patents and trademarks | Small IP firms needing both rights in one docket |
| PATTSY WAVE | IP management and docketing for larger firms and corporate IP departments | By quote | Patent and trademark docketing | Broader mixed IP operations |
| Clio | General legal practice management with calendaring | Check current pricing | Not trademark specific. Deadlines are entered or rule based, not read from trademark office records | General practice administration with separate docket control |
| Anaqua | Enterprise IP management for corporations and large firms | By quote | Enterprise IP scope. Confirm required trademark workflows in the quote | Large or complex IP operations |
| Trademarking | Trademark search, filing preparation, watch and portfolio tracking | Founder, Business and Agency subscriptions with watched mark allowances | Renewal, declaration of use, office action and opposition deadlines read from public registry records | Trademark portfolios needing registry tracking and daily watch |
What trademark docketing software should track
A useful docket connects the triggering record, legal deadline, responsible person and next action. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the deadline coverage below using representative matters. Counsel should verify the official correspondence and applicable rule before accepting a calculated date.
- Office action responses. A standard USPTO response period is 3 months, extendable by another 3 months for a fee. Keep the original deadline visible until the extension is obtained.
- Section 8 declarations. Track the declaration of use window between years 5 and 6. The docket should prompt preparation of evidence, not merely display the final filing date.
- Combined Section 8 and 9 renewals. Track the window between years 9 and 10 and the 6 month grace period. Distinguish the ordinary deadline from the grace deadline when assigning work.
- Statements of use. After a notice of allowance, the statement of use is due in 6 months, with extensions available up to 5 times. Check that each granted extension changes the pending task correctly.
- Oppositions. The ordinary opposition period is 30 days after publication and can be extended. Confirm the publication date and any extension before relying on the docket.
Use the trademark renewal guide to plan evidence collection and the trademark opposition guide when reviewing a publication. A displayed date does not establish that a filing was accepted. Keep the filing receipt and close the task only after checking what was submitted.
How much does trademark docketing software cost
Compare cost per matter using the actual invoice and active portfolio. Per user pricing also depends on licensed users. Watched mark allowances are a different unit from docketed matters, so the Trademarking examples assume each matter requires one watched mark. They do not establish a separate docket capacity limit.
A firm with 40 matters
Alt Legal's listed entry plan costs 60 USD divided by 40 matters, or 1.50 USD per matter monthly, with unlimited users. AppColl PM Pro's listed starting price is 100 USD divided by 40, or 2.50 USD per matter monthly for each licensed user. Multiply the AppColl subscription by the users who need licenses.
For 40 watched marks, Trademarking Business's 25 mark allowance is insufficient. Agency costs 999 USD monthly, or about 24.98 USD per watched mark monthly at that occupancy. Its 5,988 USD annual price divided by 40 is 149.70 USD per watched mark per year. Unused allowance remains part of the subscription cost.
A firm with 200 matters
Alt Legal's 50 matter entry allowance does not cover this portfolio; obtain current pricing rather than multiplying entry plans. At AppColl's listed starting rate, 100 USD divided by 200 is 0.50 USD per matter monthly for each licensed user. Confirm the applicable edition, user count and terms.
For 200 watched marks, Trademarking Agency costs about 5.00 USD per watched mark monthly on monthly billing, calculated as 999 USD divided by 200. Annual billing costs 5,988 USD divided by 200, or 29.94 USD per watched mark per year. These figures compare subscription allocation, not equivalent services.
Trademarking Founder costs 99 USD monthly or 588 USD yearly with 3 watched marks. Business costs 299 USD monthly or 1,788 USD yearly with 25 watched marks and 5 seats. Agency includes 250 watched marks, unlimited seats, API access and white label reports. Check plan pricing and allowances against your portfolio. PATTSY WAVE and Anaqua require quotes; check Clio's current pricing separately.
Docketing and watch are different jobs
A docket tracks actions on matters already in your portfolio. That alone does not alert you when a third party files a similar mark. Watch software looks for relevant registry activity outside those matters. A firm needs an assigned reviewer to assess a watch result and add any resulting opposition task to its docket.
Trademarking combines daily registry watch with portfolio deadline tracking. Confirm watch scope separately when evaluating any docketing vendor. Our trademark monitoring overview explains the watch workflow, and the law firm monitoring software comparison helps assess alternatives. Use a trademark search when investigating a result; an alert still needs legal analysis.
Firms that also track client engagement letters and license agreements can evaluate contract management software alongside the trademark docket, with responsibility assigned for contractual dates as well as registry deadlines.
How to choose for a small firm
Start with the work your paralegal actually performs. During a demonstration, follow a matter from receipt of correspondence through review, assignment and completion. Use these criteria to make the discussion concrete.
- Rights covered. If patents and trademarks must share a docket, choose AppColl, PATTSY WAVE or Anaqua. Ask which required workflows the proposed package includes.
- Source verification. Ask how an imported office record becomes a deadline and how staff inspect the source. Include an amended record or extension in the demonstration.
- Responsibility and review. Test how the firm assigns a task, checks a date and covers an absent colleague. A shared calendar still needs an accountable owner.
- Portfolio economics. Count matters, watched marks and licensed users separately. Ask how growth changes the invoice and which services require another purchase.
- Scope beyond docketing. Decide whether billing and general practice management belong in the same system. Evaluate watch alerts separately from deadline reminders.
Compare the trademark management software workflow with your existing tools and review our law firm use case. Before moving a portfolio, reconcile open deadlines against official records and agree who checks the imported matters.
What is the best trademark docketing software?
Alt Legal is a fit for dedicated trademark docketing, while AppColl suits small firms handling US patents and trademarks together. Trademarking suits trademark portfolios combining registry deadline tracking with daily watch. PATTSY WAVE and Anaqua merit evaluation for broader IP operations. Choose according to rights, workflow and pricing model.
Does Clio do trademark docketing?
Clio provides general legal practice management and calendaring, rather than trademark specific docketing from office records. Trademark deadlines must be entered or rule based. A firm using it should maintain a process for checking USPTO correspondence and confirming dates. Evaluate dedicated docketing separately if automatic registry updates are required.
How much does Alt Legal cost?
G2 lists Alt Legal's entry plan at 60 USD per month for up to 50 matters with unlimited users. Treat that as a published reference and check current pricing with the vendor. Larger portfolios need an applicable quote; the entry price does not establish a rate for every matter count.
Can docketing software read USPTO deadlines automatically?
Yes. Alt Legal pulls USPTO data to update matters, and AppColl lists auto docketing for US patents and trademarks. Trademarking reads renewal, declaration of use, office action and opposition deadlines from public registry records. Confirm the events covered during evaluation and assign someone to verify dates against official correspondence.
